The thing is that poor pressings should be giving noise and distortion problems across the entire record side, the OP says he only has problems in one track in the soft passages. The cartridge would have a particularly hard time with the treble, like the flutes. But I've had problems tracking classical LPs with elliptical styli - if aligned to Baerwald, the end would distort, if aligned to Stevenson, the middle would distort. Until the record is clean there is no way to find out exactly what's causing what. Unlikely to have been played on repeat then! I have to stop checking vinylengine before going to bed. Liverpuddle isn’t that far from me so I’m always open to the option of a road trip if it would help I will also try the BD stylus on the AT and see how that goes. I will be honest, when it comes to classical albums, my AT91 wouldn’t be the first one that jumped into my hand, but I will give it a go and see how it handles Mercury on both of my copies and report back, a friend of mine has the bog standard rega carbon and he thinks it sounds wonderful, but then he isn’t the most discerning of listener  I have a Hallmark LPO/Boult that is a good quality pressing, but I’m not a fan of Boult’s conduction, I also have the CFP Hallé/Loughran that isn’t the best quality wise but I prefer the presentation, I am toying with the idea of picking up the EMI Philharmonia/Rattle release as I like the life that Rattle injects, but I’m not sure what the quality of the pressing is.

That said, if the album has only had one former keeper, they may well have had a real soft spot for the fun little glockenspiel.Īlso, which release of the planets is it as there are some very cheap and nasty ones out there that are not the best examples.

Mercury - The winged messenger is less well known and thus that track being more worn less likely. Jupiter - The bringer of jollity is the one that is used for one of the rugby tournaments, that is very well known so extra wear on that track is likely. I don’t mean this in a pedantic way Alf, but I think you have Mercury and Jupiter mixed up.
